What are you going to be for Halloween?

halloween-cat-and-broomI received an email from my BFF’s daughter asking this question. Actually, her little boy was the one who asked it. She has invited us over for Halloween evening (look for photos next week). She’s cooking dinner for us too.  Now that question has made me wonder about what her costume should be. Since she reads this blog occasionally, I have a couple of suggestions for her, and I’ve never been known to keep my suggestions to myself.

She recently colored her hair. She said it turned out black and it’s growing on her – no pun intended. So, in keeping with her new hair color, I’m offering a few suggestions for her Halloween costume. That bastion of accuracy, Wikipedia, was my source for the brief biographies of the following.

May I introduce Lily Munster?

Lily Munster was born in 1827 to Sam Dracula (Grandpa) and his 166th wife (referred to only as “Grandma”). She lived with Grandpa for some time in Transylvania before meeting Herman Munster and marrying him in 1865. She, Grandpa, and Herman moved to America sometime before the mid-1940s and adopted her sister’s child, Marilyn. In the mid-1950s she gave birth to Eddie, her and Herman’s only child.Lily.Munster

My second suggestions is Morticia A. Addams, wife of Gomez Addams and mother of Wednesday and Pugsley. Morticia’s maiden name is “Frump” and she has a twin sister named Ophelia (also played by Carolyn Jones). Her mother was named Hester Frump.

Morticia has pale skin and long black hair. She commonly wears black gothic dresses to match her hair, tightly form-fitting, with a hobble skirt. According to Wednesday, Morticia applies baking powder to her face instead of actual makeup. In each episode, she easily allures her husband Gomez by speaking French (or any other foreign language for that matter). Morticia is musically inclined, and is often seen freely strumming a shamisen. She frequently enjoys cutting the buds off of roses which she discards, keeping only the stems. She also has a carnivorous plant, an African Strangler named Cleopatra, which she enjoys feeding. morticianaddams

And then there’s Elvira… I’m really not promoting Elvira as a viable choice, because she’s a bit …. well…. um…should I say suggestive, but I’m including her here because she has the dark hair, and is part of the American…um….Halloween … um…culture…. um….I dunno…. She has black hair, okay?  By the way, this was one of the few non-revealing photos I could find of her, and it depicts the difference between the true appearance of Cassandra Peterson and the vampish character she portrays, Elvira.

Cassandra Peterson (born September 17, 1951) is an American actress best known for her on-screen horror hostess character Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. She gained fame on Los Angeles television station KHJ wearing a black, gothic, cleavage-enhancing gown as host of Movie Macabre, a weekly horror movie presentation. Her wickedly vampish appearance is offset by her comical character, quirky/quick-witted personality, and valley girl-type speech.Cassandra_Peterson_Elvira

If Bek agrees to dress as Lily Munster, maybe I can convince Herm to go as Herman Munster. Maybe.

Happy Halloween, everybody!
